WebPKI Observatory — Distrust History
Sixteen total distrust events have occurred across the WebPKI's history, with 14 attributed to compliance and operational failures rather than technical attacks. Pattern-of-issues cases account for 10 events, while the posture distribution shows seven instances of negligent noncompliance and three of willful circumvention. The presence of argumentative noncompliance and demonstrated incompetence categories in the distrust taxonomy reveals that CAs fail not just through accident but through cultural resistance to accountability, a finding that connects directly to the 22% self-detection rate visible in operational incident data.
